Collect Meditation for the 4th Sunday after Epiphany Part I

O GOD, who knowest us to be set in the midst of so many and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright; Grant to us such strength and protection, as may support us in all dangers, and carry us through all temptations; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The first half of the Collect prayer for this week speaks to how God knows our plight and how by the frailty of our nature, we cannot stand upright. What is our plight? We are set in the “midst of so many and great dangers.” God is not aloof from the realities we face in this fallen world. He proved this through sending His only begotten Son Jesus Christ into the world. Jesus lived in the midst of the many and great dangers of this world on our behalf. He lived through it all as every person lives through it and overcame it perfectly in all manners. He did this because due to the frailty of our nature, we cannot stand upright one hundred percent of the time. Knowing we could not meet the requirement of the Law, perfection; Jesus stood upright through all dangers and temptations. He did this to save us, to rescue us from our inability to stand upright all the time. Through God’s relationship with us as His dear children through Christ, He knows all we face and cares for all our needs. He is not aloof. He is present with us as we face all dangers.
